Our Q1 2022 hiring analysis of the Big 4 continues with EY. Let’s take a look at some of the key trends below.

Total Job Listings

Hiring is up across most of EY’s Service Lines since the last quarter. Technology and Advisory Service Lines, in particular, have increased their demand. The 200% year-on-year increase in listings is strong evidence that EY has transitioned to business as usual hiring post Covid. The reduced hiring during the Covid period may have suited partners well (ahem, record profits for most of the Big 4). However, delivering projects with less than adequate team sizes is not a recipe for long term growth and success (ahem, burnout).

By Grade

As per our previous hiring analysis for Deloitte, hiring at the Manager grades is the strongest by quite a margin. Manager is an attractive hiring grade as it opens up the door for candidates in both industry and other Big 4 departments to try something new. Hiring of senior grades (Director/Partner) is also popular. The increased hiring of Partners is particularly interesting. A combination of increasingly aggressive sales targets and attractive industry opportunities gives Partners more to think about when planning their long-term futures.

By Service Line

A brief summary of the hiring requirements for each of the major Service Lines is below. As requirements can vary depending on the department in question, the stats below should primarily act as a representation of the key hiring trends.

It is somewhat surprising to see the ACCA as the most in-demand qualification across audit. This may be due to its versatility as an international qualification in comparison to the ACA. Another surprising skill is Negotiation, this is primarily required within Banking and Capital Markets departments.

Governance and Compliance roles lead the hiring for Risk. IT Risk is also in quite high demand with IT Audit (CISA) and Security (CISSP) related departments requiring talent. Operating System knowledge (Windows and Red Hat) is required for some roles within IT Audit.

Tax, again, is the largest hiring Service Line within EY. International Tax departments, in particular, are hiring in large numbers. Oracle and SAP knowledge is required for Indirect Tax Advisory services.

EY looks to be growing in many interesting areas within Technology. Cloud is a focus area for most of the Big 4 and Agile is a cornerstone of most Technology related projects. The strong hiring of Artificial Intelligence talent is evidence of EY’s focus on growing Intelligent Automation services and other related departments.

This finalises our analysis of EY’s hiring trends for Q1 2022, we hope it was useful! We will continue with a review of KPMG next week.

Until next time,

Nathan
