As we come to an end of the first quarter of 2022, we begin our review of the hiring trends of the Big 4 firms. We start with Deloitte, let’s take a look below.
Total Job Listings
Before we begin the comparison to the previous quarter, it should be noted that overall listings are up more than 100% year on year! The Big 4 have bounced back in a big way from the peak Covid period. Consulting demand, in particular, has increased strongly during the recent quarter. Technology roles related to Cloud and Analytics lead the demand. Outside of Consulting, hiring for the other major Service Lines remains stable. We expect overall hiring to be variable over the next few months due to geopolitical tensions and increased inflation. Hopefully things return back to normal as we progress through the year.
By Grade
Deloitte is primarily looking for talent across the Manager grades. There are plenty of opportunities, with a wide range of roles and corresponding salary increases available. As manager is a grade when most Big 4 graduate entrants have been at their firms for 4-5 years, it tends to act as a natural transition point. Director/Partner grades are also in high demand. This highlights the need for additional Sales support to grow popular services. A surprise at this grade is the increased hiring of talent from industry (i.e. people who have not had previous Professional Services experience). This highlights the typical ‘disconnect’ between Directors/Partners and other grades. Directors/Partners need to know what they are selling but they don’t tend to get involved in the nuts and bolts of delivery.
By Service Line
We won’t go into too much detail on the requirements for the individual Service Lines as they can vary significantly based on department. We have, however, listed the key overarching requirements for the primary Service Lines listed below.
Accounting qualifications such as the ACA/ACCA are the big requirement for Audit departments. An interesting requirement is the demand for US based accounting skills (US GAAP, PACOB). As Deloitte audits some very large and complex companies, knowledge of US related accounting treatments where relevant may be beneficial.
It’s all about Tech in relation to Consulting roles. Knowledge of various cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure and GCP are in high demand. In addition, knowledge of technical project management tools such as DevOps and Git are also required. Outside of Tech, there are Consulting roles available in relation to Governance and M & A advisory.
In-demand Risk roles are similar to those of Consulting however Governance and Compliance experience are at the top of the list. IT qualifications such as the NIST and CISSP are beneficial for candidates who are looking to apply for Security based technology roles.
The requirements for formal qualifications for Tax are similar to Audit with the CTA/ACA required across a large number of roles. Tax Compliance is the key skill with Transfer Pricing and M & A experience is also required across 20+ available roles.
So that’s a wrap for our Q1 2022 analysis of Deloitte UK’s hiring requirements. We hope that you enjoyed it and please feel free to reach out if you have any feedback!
Until next time,
Nathan
